What am I doing ...

When writing religious or sacred music I'm not trying to be original in style or harmony, etc., but only to be true to the intent of the words so the music can remain worshipful.
I view and experience each piece as a prayer and have no care for its place in the historical arc of music development, only its role in the eternal spiritual realm as a pathway towards, movement with God.
That is my entire intent and the purpose of the music. It is not created to be beautiful on an extrinsic scale or to merely please or entertain the ear, but to guide the soul.
Dissonance has a creative and dramatic purpose but, just like excessive virtuosity or technical displays of musical craft, it distracts the soul from uniting with God, in whom there is no dissonance or place for the feeble accomplishments of mere men.
Consonant tension and resolution are an effective picture of our human relationship with God.
Worship music does not need to be au courant, hipper than thou, or avant garde, it must merely be holy.
