"It was when I was happiest that I longed the most . . . the sweetest thing in all my life has been the longing . . . to find the place where all the beauty came from." C. S. Lewis
Music was given to us, not to glorify the self in feats of impressive accomplishment, but to glorify God. Music is a unique and special gift from God. It is not merely just one of many human art forms of expression. It is deeply embedded in our language process. Language is another special gift from God. Both gifts set apart us from His other creatures and allow us a very special relationship with Him. Music is in reality, although few really realize how, another human, but more abstract, language. That is why uniting words with music creates a most profound and powerful effect.
From the beginning of the recorded history of man's relationship with, and worship, of God, music has played a central role. If the faithful could develop their musical language skill to a similar level as their spoken language skill, what a glorious worship of God would be possible. At this time, as individuals discover what they can truly do with the musical language, that ability seems abnormal and hence they stand out from the crowd. Eventually, it may be possible for the reading and performing music for God's glory to reach the same level in the general population as the reading and praying of His written word has.
