A Gaelic Sacred Bouquet

A collection of five traditional Irish hymns arranged in a medley for women's voices by Mark Ruttle.

O BREATHE ON ME O BREATH OF GOD:  The text of this Pentecost hymn was written by Edwin Hatch (1835-1889) and set to a traditional Irish tune attributed to St. Columba.

I LOVE THEE O THOU LORD MOST HIGH: Edward Caswall (1814-1878) paraphrased the words to this hymn from the Latin hymn of St. Ignatius of Loyola (1491 -1556); O Deus Ego Amote, which also appears in another musical setting on this album. It also seems to be inspired bye St. Ignatius’ “Suscipe” prayer. The text comes from Edward Caswall's original poem from his 1858 collection of poetry The Masque of Mary. The music is a tradional Irish tune.

O JESU CLEANSE MY HEART (Íosa, Glan mo Chroíse):  An Advent hymn traditionally said as a prayer before the reading of the Gospel. The source of the tune is unknown. The words of the prayer perhaps seem to be inspired by or paraphrasing Psalm 19.

ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND WELCOMES, O JESU (Céad míle Fáilte Rombat A Íosa): A traditional Irish welcome and salute set to a traditional Irish tune. Author of lyrics and tune unknown. The hymn is often used at First Holy Communion and Christmas Eve.

BE THOU MY VISION: A traditional hymn  from Ireland,  in 1919 the lyrics were set to the tune of the Irish folk tune  Slane which itself is a distillation of several other folk tunes. The song has often been attributed to the sixth-century Irish  poet St. Dallan , though some scholars cite an eighth-century date. The prayer had been a part of Irish monastic  tradition for centuries before its setting to music.

O breathe on me, O breath of God, fill me with life anew,

That I may love what Thous dost love, and do what Thous wouldst do.

O breathe on me, O breath of God, until my heart is pure.

Until with Thee I have one will to do and to endure.

O breathe on me, O breath of God, 'til I am wholly Thine,

Until this earthly part of me glows with Thy fire divine.

I love Thee O Thou Lord most high, because Thou first hast loved me,

I seek no other liberty than that of being bound to Thee.

Apart from Thee, all things are nought, then grant O my supremest bliss,

Grant me to love Thee as I ought, Thou givest all in giving this.

O Jesu cleanse my heart, make it spotless each day,

O Jesu rule my mind by the power of your love.

Cleanse my thoughts make truly clean the words of my mouth,

And dear Lord God guide my life now and forever more.
